Cargills Food City FA Cup

The champions of this year’s Cargills Food City FA Cup Football Tournament will receive a cash award of Rs. 1 million.

Cargills Food City is putting its weight behind the FA Cup Championsh­ip for the 4th consecutiv­e year in line with their partnershi­p with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL).

This was reveled by the FFSL Finance Committee Chairman Ranjith Rodrigo and Dhammika Guruge , Chief Operating Officer (COO) Cargills during a press briefing held at the Football House in Colombo yesterday.

Last year the champions received Rs. 700,000 but this year following a request made by the media it has been increased.

The tournament will commence tomorrow (26) and will consist of 672 teams from 65 leagues with the preliminar­y rounds being conducted at league level (knockout basis). A total of 671 matches will be worked off.

Accordingl­y each league will hold knock out rounds for its clubs and the champions from each league will progress to the next round. The final of the tournament will be held on April 8.

“We believe Sri Lanka Football can be further harnessed through the Cargills Food City team, young men and women hailing from across the island - as do the players of this phenomenal game. They provide an ideal platform to ignite a renewed passion towards the game from the grassroots to the national level” said Dhammika Guruge, COO of Cargills Foods Company (CFC).

Meanwhile, Anura de Silva President FFSL said foreign players are not permitted to play in this year’s tournament. Last year Colombo FC won the FA Cup defeating Renown in the final.
