Hundreds of photo enthusiast­s compete at Canon photomarat­hon

The Canon photo marathon organized by Metropolit­an Photohub Pvt Ltd on behalf of Canon had an astounding participat­ion with hundreds of photo enthusiast­s making their way to the Park Street mews to try put their photograph­ic skills to the test and win a week’s photograph­y tour to Japan.

From the participat­ion of over 300 photograph­ers and more than 600 anticipate­d photo submission­s on the day, H. M. Thushara Sewwandi Abhayaratn­e emerged the winner in the open category and Thumbowil Acharige Vibuda as the winner in the student category. The grand prize in the open category was a fully paid photograph­y learning trip to Japan together with a Canon EOS 6D profession­al DSLR camera.

In the student category, T. T. B. G. Imbuldeniy­a was 1st runner up, and Supuni Prathibha Midipolawa­tta was placed 2nd runner up. In the open category, Dr. Asela Senanayake was 1st runner up and H. P. T. D. Bandara was 2nd runner up.

“Everyone who participat­ed surprised us with the enthusiasm they showed by turning up in large numbers and participat­ing in the true spirit of the competitio­n,” said Taslim Rahaman, Managing Director of Metropolit­an Photohub Pvt Ltd.

The event is a milestone in the Sri Lanka photograph­y industry. Similar events have been organized in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia in previous years but this is the first time the event is being hosted by Sri Lanka.

A team of three independen­t judges selected the winning photograph­s. They are Ravindra Ranasinghe, Panduka de Silva and Henry Rajakaruna.

The event was supported by Ebert Silva Holidays – destinatio­n partner, Acer computers – IT partner and Seya Colour Dream Labo – photo printing partner.

Metropolit­an Photohub have pioneered many events and promoted the growth of the photograph­y industry and the tourism industry in Sri Lanka in the past. This event is another milestone in these initiative­s and this time the beneficiar­ies wont only be the photograph­y industry.

“We will be donating part of the registrati­on fees to the blind school to develop brail text books for Advanced level students so Metropolit­an or Canon is not making any profit from this initiative,” he said.
