Do not abolish Executive Presidency: Gnanasara Thera

- BY CHATURANGA PRADEEP

The Executive Presidency should not be changed because everything in the Constitution is bonded together by the Executive, Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera said yesterday.

While addressing media yesterday Ven. Gnanasara Thera said, if the executive powers were removed, the whole country would disintegrate.

“The country will be divided on the lines of nationality, ethnicity and religion and the country will definitely divide and lead to a bloodshed,” he said.

“On the other hand proposals had been made to divide the country into five zones with the Central Government. This excise had not been done in any other country in the world. India and most of the Western European countries want the country divided into five zones and the controlling power decentralized,” the Thera said.

“That is why the separatists are trying to remove the executive powers form the country. We strictly say that the Executive Presidency in the country should not be changed because all the things in the Constitution are bound by the Executive. We will invite the so-called patriots, Tamil and Muslim

All the previous rulers had assured to abolish the Executive Presidency in the country as soon as they came to power, but no one ever did it

people to come forward together to protect the Executive Presidency in the country,” he said.

“All the previous rulers had assured to abolish the Executive Presidency in the country as soon as they came to power, but no one ever did it.there is no harm in keeping the Executive Presidency in the country but the weakness was in the Government not trying to use it properly,” the Thera said.

“The new Yahapalana Government is not changing the important tenets of the Constitution but to change minor elements to build the reconciliation in the country.while removing the minor elements in the Constitution it had been proposed to remove the powers of the Governments making policies.we are planning to call thousands of Buddhist priests to Colombo and defeat the Constitution which is a deadly trap,” the Thera said.
