Teejay sweeps highest number of Golds at NBEA 2016
Teejay Lanka PLC, the newly rebranded regional fabric manufacturing giant, sparkled at the National Business Excellence Awards (NBEA) 2016, the prestigious annual awards ceremony organised by the National Chamber of Commerce.
Teejay came out a winner amongst its peers in the corporate community, ending the night with six Golds and one Silver.
From among the eight categories being marked in the competition, it won five Gold awards in the categories: Excellence in Corporate Governance, Excellence in Local Market Reach, Excellence in Performance Management, Excellence in Capacity Building and Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility.
Teejay’s Silver award was for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability and the company also bagged the Gold award for the Apparel, Textile and Leather Products Sector, adding up to its total of seven awards.
Teejay Managing Director and CEO Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne, commending his team on the win, said, “The breadth of awards won was a clear demonstration that we have come a very long way as a company. To excel not just in one or two aspects but allround is no mean fete and I congratulate our team on this outstanding performance. It is a solid demonstration of all the great work we do every day and a clear milestone achieved. It is a standard to keep flying as we emerge as a new, youthful and energetic entity. NBEA 2016 held at the Hilton Colombo, had Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy as the chief guest, as well as a host of key corporate personalities in attendance.
The judging criteria of the NBEA is based mainly on the formula used by the European Federation of Quality Management (EFQM), the standard for Europe, as well as some criterion taken from the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards of the USA. The National Chamber of Commerce has formulated its NBEA by combining the standards of both business excellence models and coming up with one that is best suited for Sri Lanka’s corporate sector.
Teejay was recently named amongst the Forbes 2016 Asia’s best 200 companies under a billion list, bringing honour to Sri Lanka and the textile industry at large. The company is also placed amongst the top 30 local entities picked by Business Today. Formerly known as Textured Jersey, the company consolidated its Indian and Sri Lankan operations under its new identity ‘Teejay’ announcing it to the public recently. The CEO said the NBEA win would be another landmark that would inspire their forward journey.
