ARMAND, HIRUNA, VINOD SHINE ON DAY ONE

Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip

Armand Flamer Caldera, Hiruna Siegara and Vinod Weerasingh­e were able to take the lead on day one at the Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip 2016, which commenced at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) yesterday.

The three competitor­s who displayed some good golf, will resume play today (8) with an advantage over their opponents, having being placed first on the standings with a gross score of 76 in the 15-17 years age group category (Gold Division).

However, they could face tough competitio­n from Taniya Balasuriya and Dilip Kumar, who ended day one with gross scores of 81 and 89 respective­ly.

In the 12-14 years age group category (Silver Division), Mahisha Hirushan was able to take the lead with a gross score of 82, edging-out Kayla Perera who ended on second spot with a gross 84. Himal Randima and S. Sanju were both tied on third spot with a gross score of 87. Meanwhile, Nirekh Tejwani was able to get a slight lead in the 10-11 years age category (Bronze Division) as he ended up with a gross score of 61, closely followed by Yannik Kumara with gross 62.

Both Abinav Basker and Sherin Balasuriya, with a gross score of 67, came in third place after the first day of play. K. Danushan 68, Pranav Muralidara­n 72 and Kiran Vairavanat­han 76, were also able to mark their presence felt at the end of play.

In the junior category, nine years and under (Copper Division), Shanal Binuksha was able to accumulate a gross score of 46 by three shots and took the lead.

Kvahn Tejwani ended the day being placed second, with a gross score of 49. Dharaniyan from Nuwara Eliya shot a 52 gross while both Musa Shariff from Kandy and Shenuk Fernando were placed fourth with a gross score of 56.
