Red Bull Ride My Wave’s in Ahangama

- BY M. SHAMIL AMIT

All arrangements have been finalised to conduct the third edition of the Red Bull Ride My Wave surfing championship on December 10 and 11 at the Southern Coast Kabalana beach in Ahangama.

The inaugural championship was held two years ago (2014) with the participation of the best surfers from the East and South coast. The organisers invited international surfers last year for the event which was held in Arugam Bay, which turned out to be successful with one of Sri Lanka’s top surfers Asanga Waduge emerging champion. The organisers this time too have left no stone unturned to make it another successful event. They have got the confirmation of over 100 surfers both local and international to battle it out with top cash awards for the winners.

The event will be judged by three fully accredited ISA judges with two having worked and judged in WSL events around the world. Kai Linder the Surf Director who was part of the 2015 event will also join the trio.

Kai mentioned,“this event is going to be somewhat different as the southern waves are completely different to the northern and we are looking forward to experiencing another tense battle due to that,” adding “Hopefully Sri Lanka surfers will gain some much needed experience through these events and join global contests in the future.” Last year’s winner Asanga Waduge was of the view that “The event is not going to be easy as the waves in the two areas are completely different. Therefore we will have to master their nature and then use it to our advantage.”

He added,“but you can be sure that I’ll give everything I’ve got and I will be seeking to defend my title.”

US$ 3,000 is on offer for the top three winners with the winner carrying away a cash prize of US$ 1,500 the second placed will receive US$ 1,000 and the third US$ 500.
