Shanal wins Copper Division

Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip

Shanal Binuksha won the nine years and under age group category (Copper Division) of the Sri Lanka Junior Open National Golf Championsh­ip 2016 continued at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) yesterday. Shanal accumulate­d a gross score of 46 and 49 to take the title. Kvahn Tejwani, who was on hot pursuit of Shanal from day one, ended on second spot with a gross score of 49 and 47.

Musa Shariff of Kandy took the third place with a gross 56, 51 while T. Deshan was placed fourth (gross 58, 50). Shenuk Fernando was placed fifth after he managed to score 56 and 57. In the Bronze Division for golfers of ages 10-11 years, Yannik Kumara managed to take a comfortabl­e lead after day two with a total gross score of 120 (62 and 58).

Nirekh Tejwani followed in second spot with a total score of 126 while Sherin Balasuriya ended up at third spot tied alongside K. Danushan with a gross score of 135.

In the Silver Division (age group 12-14 years) playing 18 holes, Kayla Perera took the lead with a four over par Kvahn Tejwani, who was on hot pursuit of Shanal from day one, ended on second spot with a gross score of 49 and 47 round off red tees with a total aggregate score of 160 (gross 84, 76).

She will be going into the final day with an easy lead of eleven shots over Dilshan Malinda on second place with a total score of 171 (gross 90, 81).

S. Sanju and Mahisha Hirushan were both tied at third place with a total aggregate score of 172.

Taniya Balasuriya managed to surge ahead in the main championsh­ip Gold Division (age group 15 – 17 yrs) to secure the top spot after carding a brilliant one over par round of gross 73.

She displayed super ball contact and touch on the greens to prove her contention with the boys in the category with gross scores of 81 and 73. Both Armand Flamer Caldera and Vinod Weerasingh­e, tied at second spot, followed on closely with gross scores of 78 and 79 over the two days.
