Chamari, Nipuni steer Sri Lanka into Super Six

Chamari Polgampola and Nipuni Hansika associated in a valuable 65-run stand for the second wicket to help Sri Lanka Women coast to an easy seven-wicket win over Thailand Women in their last Group A encounter of the ICC Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament played at the MCA ground yesterday.

The pair’s partnershi­p enabled Sri Lanka Women, in pursuit of 123 runs for victory, to reach the target in the 35th over which saw them end with three wins to take second slot in the group.

A five-wicket haul by spinner Poonam Yadav paved the way for India Women to cruise through to a convincing nine-wicket win against Zimbabwe Women in another match of the same group played at P. Sara Stadium.

The win saw the Indian women’s side recording their fourth victory from as many matches to end up as the top team in Group A.

South Africa Women too ended with four wins out of four when they outclassed the hapless Papua New Guinea Women by ten wickets in a Group B match played at the NCC ground. South Africa with this win finished at the top.

Pakistan Women thanks to a five-wicket haul by skipper and left arm spinner Sana Mir recorded a six-wicket win against Scotland Women in the match played at the CCC ground.

The completion of the league matches saw India, Sri Lanka and Ireland from Group A and South Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh from Group B qualify to play in the Super Six segment which begins tomorrow.
