The annual six mile open sea swim race of the Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club will be held for the 52nd year on Sunday, March 26 on Wellawatta beach.

The club had made all arrangements to receive hundreds of swimming enthusiasts for the six mile (10 kilometer) race that would commence in the sea in front of the Kinross Club in Wellawatta.

The participants have to swim up to the Mount Lavinia Hotel, where they have to take a turn and swim back to Wellawatta via Dehiwala.

Chairman Kinross Six Mile Sea Swim Sub Committee and veteran diver Susil Perera said that this was the longest and the oldest swimming race in Sri Lanka, where thousands of skilled swimmers have participated throughout the history.

Addressing a recent press briefing Mr. Perera said, the club had recognised many talented

swimmers through this race and had awarded and rewarded them annually.

Past President Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club B. R. A. Fernando said the club was founded by well known swimming champion Michael Godwin Sirimanne alias Mike Sirimanne in September, 1941.

“The club had celebrated its diamond jubilee of 75 years in 2016 and continuing to render its service towards creating skilled swimmers and qualified life savers,” veteran swimmer Fernando said.

Media Spokesman of Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club B S Lakmal said the race is open for anyone aged above 15 years. Starting from schoolchildren swimmers from many professions and age groups including from the three forces and the police also take part in the race. The first place would be awarded with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.25, 000. The race is scheduled to commence at 7.00am on Sunday.
