Under-20 Schools Rugby

- BY M. SHAMIL AMIT

Two evenly matched teams Wesley College and Zahira College will confront in a crucial Under-20 Inter-schools Rugby Tournament match scheduled to be worked off at Longden Place today (24).

Wesley led by centre Dennister Gunatileke, after going through a setback in their first outing of the tournament against Trinity came back with a vengeance to record three victories on the trot.

Their defeat to Trinity (24-64|) did not discourage the side as they recorded wins against Prince of Wales (28-10), S. Thomas’ 23-19) and Science College (3610) respectively.

The side spearheaded by Skipper Dennister and his deputy prop forward Shamail Amit along with the Lee brothers, Avantha (full back) and Avishka (scrum half), hooker Zain Dole, flanker Imesh Aponso, fly half Taariq Jurangpathy, second row forward Mursheed Zubair and winger Dineru Ranaweera will be looking to produce another good performance in this encounter.

However, the Zahirians will be a tough opposition as they too posses players who are capable of turning the game in their favour.

Zahira, led by second row forward Azhar Irfan is enjoying one of their best seasons for a long time and they have produced some scintillating rugby this season.

They began the season with a win against Science College (1913) before losing to S. Thomas’ in a close contest (24-29). They were on the losing side against Trinity (26-34) and then outclassed Prince of Wales College (64-12) in the previous match.

The two danger players for the Wesleyites could be fly half Zaid Sinhawansa and winger Yuzraan Lantra who are players with immense potential.

Apart from them the Zahirians have scrum half Shifaz Amath, full back Minhaj Samsudeen, prop forward Muammar Deen and a host of others whom they can depend on to steer them to victory.
