Zimbabwe Coach Heath Streak was not surprised when he learned that the West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine recently played together in the same First-class cricket match.

Interestingly, also the half centuries by both Chanderpauls came for Guyana in their match against Jamaica in Kingston. Heath Streak and his father Denis also played together in the same First-class match before the Chanderpauls.

Streaks played for Matabeleland in Zimbabwe’s Logan Cup final in Bulawayo in April 1996.

“Having my father play with me in the same match was special as he was my mentor and inspiration,” Heath Streak, speaking from Harare, said.

When asked who was under pressure, the father or the son, Heath Streak

said: “probably my father as his age is the challenge. However, the experience carried him through. I, on the other hand didn’t want to be outclassed.”

Streak said they had no issue if both had failed or one failed and the other had succeeded. “Failure was not an issue. It is a part of the game. Luckily when we played we had more success than failure.”

“Parents are more understanding though...”, he added.

Heath’s father, now 67, played 14 First-class matches, whereas Heath Steak has played 65 Tests and 189 ODIS.

The 44-year-old Heath Steak will be in India for coaching one of the IPL Teams.
