Attanayake’s passport released
The Colombo High Court yesterday released the passport of former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake back to him to get his Australian Visa stamped on it.
The Court made this order yesterday on considering his request made in court to allow him to travel to visit his daughter in Australia.
Mr. Attanayake’s passport was retained by the Colombo High Court in a case of preparing and releasing a forged document to the media thereby affecting the campaign of the then Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena during the 2015 January Presidential Election campaign.
Mr.attanayake was charged under the Presidential Elections Act and under Section 454 of the Penal Code on alleged displaying of the forged document. In addition he was also charged for alleged propagation of a document that would create racial and religious hatred under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act No 56 of 2007.
Mr. Attanayake defected the UNP and supported Mahinda Rajapaksa during the 2014 Presidential Election campaign and displayed a document to the media alleged to be an agreement between the then common candidate of the Opposition Maithripala Sirisena and the then Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe.
