Tamils need a new leader to guide them: Karuna Amman

- BY A.H.A.HUSSAIN

The Tamils in this country fought for a cause and finally got nothing in return, Tamil United Freedom Front (TUFF) Leader and former Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman said on Monday. “The youth at that time saw the armed struggle as the last resort to win our demands and set out to win their goals by force. However our struggle resulted in many lives being lost, plots, leadership-struggles and our fellow fighters being killed and ended with the massacre at Mulliwaikkal,” he said. Calling on the people to now reject the TNA as their leaders he said there was Muslim authoritarianism in the East and a leadership struggle in the North. “In order to set ourselves free from this quagmire we must reject the old leadership and let the youth take over,” he said. We must defeat the TNA in the Eastern Provincial elections and make way for a Tamil Chief Minister in the East,” he said. “We are going to form a new Tamil force and contest alone. We want Tamils in the East to rally round us. This is not similar to the LTTE struggle. It is a struggle to release the Tamils from the clutches of Muslims. Hence I call upon the diaspora to extend their support to us,” Karuna Amman said.

“To the world outside, this government calls itself ‘the government of good governance’, whereas all we are left with are gunshots,” he said, referring to the shooting incident at Karadiyanaru in Batticaloa. He added that the trend in the country was not at all favourable to the Tamils pointing out that two Tamils in the North and one youth in the East had been killed in the last month alone.

Recalling the 1983 ethnic riots, Muralitharan said “today is a watershed day in the history of the Tamils. In 1983, the UNP regime, headed by J.r.jayawardene, organised an ethnic pogrom against the Tamils, killing 3,000 of them.there is a fear among the Tamils in the North and East that the UNP government would unleash another bloodbath in this country,” he said.

The shooting aimed at the Jaffna High Court Judge caused great concern and the boot-licking TNA was ignoring this incident and continues to support the government, Muralitharan said.
