THREE DIE AFTER FALLING INTO UNPROTECTE­D WELL AT GIRIULLA

Three persons died after they fell into an unprotecte­d well during a wedding ceremony in Giriulla on Wednesday night, police said.

They said one person, a Police Constable had accidental­ly fallen into the well which was covered with planks near the reception hall. Subsequent­ly two others met their fate during their attempt to rescue the cop who had fallen earlier with ropes and ladder. People who gathered at the spot took the three victims of drowning out of the well and rushed them to the Dambadeniy­a hospital, however, they were pronounced dead on admission, the police said.

The victims were identified as 39-year-old Mahinda Karunarath­ne, 38-year-old Adhikari Mudiyansel­age Nisal Prasad Adhikari and 41-year-old Dambagolla Lekamlage Ajantha Lal Kumara, all residents of the Dambadeniy­a area.

Giriulla Police are conducting further investigat­ions.
