- BY SUNIL THANTHRIARACHCHI

Former OIC Kalutara North Police who stood indicted with abduction and rape of an underage girl was found guilty and sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment and fined Rs. 30,000 under the two counts by Kalutara High Court Judge Amal Thilakaratne yesterday.

He was sentenced to a further two-year period of simple imprisonment in default of the fine.

The accused Chief Inspector Harold Rex Jackson was also ordered to pay Rs.1 million as compensation to the aggrieved party and sentenced to two years’ simple imprisonment in default of the compensation payment. Delivering the sentence the judge held that the use of video scenes as evidence had now been legalized and that in this case the video scenes of the incident were largely instrumental in meting out justice to the aggrieved party.

State Counsel Dhammika Udawatta prosecuted while assigned Counsel Y. Jagoda and Attorney- at- Law Viraj Jayanath appeared for the defence.
