Spe­cial of­fi­cer to in­ves­ti­gate rape case against fmr. Akuressa PS Chair­man

A spe­cial in­ves­ti­ga­tor would be as­signed the task of in­ves­ti­gat­ing a case where for­mer Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chair­man Saruwa Liyan­age Su­nil was charged with rap­ing a 14-year-old girl dur­ing the pe­riod May 23 and July 2, 2012, the At­tor­ney Gen­eral told Colombo High Court Judge Sam­path Wi­jer­atne, when the case was called yes­ter­day.

The Judge post­poned the trial for Jan­uary 18, 2018.

In the case for­mer Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chair­man Saruwa Liyan­age Su­nil was in­dicted for rap­ing an un­der-age girl at a guest­house owned by him in 2012.

Of­fi­cers at­tached to the Women and Child Pro­tec­tion Bu­reau of the Matara Po­lice, who con­ducted the pre­lim­i­nary in­ves­ti­ga­tion, took him into cus­tody af­ter he sur­ren­dered to po­lice.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that the girl, a mi­nor, had been raped con­tin­u­ously for two days.
