Special officer to investigat­e rape case against fmr. Akuressa PS Chairman

A special investigat­or would be assigned the task of investigat­ing a case where former Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Saruwa Liyanage Sunil was charged with raping a 14-year-old girl during the period May 23 and July 2, 2012, the Attorney General told Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Wijeratne, when the case was called yesterday.

The Judge postponed the trial for January 18, 2018.

In the case former Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Saruwa Liyanage Sunil was indicted for raping an under-age girl at a guesthouse owned by him in 2012.

Officers attached to the Women and Child Protection Bureau of the Matara Police, who conducted the preliminar­y investigat­ion, took him into custody after he surrendere­d to police.

Investigat­ions revealed that the girl, a minor, had been raped continuous­ly for two days.
