Residents of Kolonnawa and Kaduwela protest

Residents of Kolonnawa and Kaduwela yesterday staged a protest near the Parliament roundabout demanding immediate compensation for their houses and properties that were affected during the floods in 2016 and 2017. More than 1500 people participated.

They said their continual representations to the authorities in this regard had been to no avail compelling them to take to the streets. They were hopeful their protest would be an eye opener to the authorities. when the vote on the Disaster Management Ministry was taken up for debate.

The protestors pointed out that the payments of compensation had gone by political favour while more than 40,000 families affected by the disaster had been left without any relief. They also claimed that the officials were not in possession of correct statistics.

They warned that they would resort to a fast- unto- death campaign if their demand was not met immediately.
