Gang tempts estate superinten­dent with fake gold pellets

All that glitters is not gold

A gang of three who cheated an estate superinten­dent in Welipenna and took away Rs.1 million in cash promising to sell him 1200 pellets of gold that was part of a treasure was arrested by Kalutara Division Fraud Investigat­ion Unit.

The kingpin of the gang had met the superinten­dent and built trust and confidence in him by supplying workers to the estate.when he confided in the estate superinten­dent that he wanted to sell 1200 pellets of gold pellets from a treasure the estate superinten­dent agreed to buy them. Later they took one of the pellets of gold to a goldsmith in Matugama town who confirmed it was of pure gold.

The following day the main suspect and two others came to the estate superinten­dent’s bungalow with the rest of the gold pellets. When the superinten­dent went inside the bungalow to prepare tea for them, the suspects had opened the door of the superinten­dent’s car and fled with a brief case containing cash Rs.1 million that was to be used to pay for the gold pellets .

In their investigat­ions police found that only the sample examined by the goldsmith was of pure gold but that the rest of the pellets were plated with gold.

The suspects and the stock of fake gold were handed over to Welipenna Police for further action.

OIC Kalutara Division Crime Investigat­ion Unit IP A.c.karunaratn­e , OIC Welipenna Police Lalith Rajamanthr­i , Sergeants 17668 Jayantha, and 26019 Dayasena conducted investigat­ions and arrested the suspects.
