Will make Colombo the best city in world by 2030: Milinda

- BY LAHIRU POTHMULLA

Milinda Rajapksha, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council said yesterday that they intend to make Colombo the most developing city in the world by 2030.

He said Colombo was crowned as the most developing city in Asia in 2014 owing to the development projects carried out by the former Defence & Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.“i intend to continue this task which has been put on hold today. We had a plan envisaged for Colombo for the next 30-50 years, back then Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made visionary development projects based on this master plan,” he told Daily Mirror.

He said they also expect to create the city self sustainable with renewable energy, disaster management and to introduce e-governance. He said citizens of Colombo are undergoing major inconveniences as of now due to the mismanagement of economy by the administration. People’s security has been taken away today. The housing units which were being built for low income dwellers had also not been completed. Therefore, people are disappointed today,” he said.

Mr. Rajapksha said Colombo lacked an effective plan to find a sustainable solution to the garbage issue.“we should make people aware of this issue and how to recycle garbage at their own residence. The use of polythene should be reduced. Then we can introduce measures to recycle garbage and to discard waste in an environment-friendly manner,” he said.

Commenting on the rising traffic congestion in the city, he said they have plans to develop and promote public transportation sector effectively.
