ELE­PHANTS AT DEHIWELA ZOO ANOINTED FOR NEW YEAR

Anoint­ing of ele­phants in the De­hi­wala Zoo for the New Year took place at the aus­pi­cious time of 10.15a.m. yes­ter­day on the in­struc­tions of the Di­rec­tor Gen­eral of the Zo­o­log­i­cal Gar­dens Dham­mika Mals­inghe.

Chief In­cum­bent of the Gal­wadugoda Sri Wi­ja­yarama Tem­ple in Galle Ven. Tha­lan­galla Samitha Thera anointed the 75-year-old tusker “Ban­dula” first. A res­i­dent monk of the De­hi­wala Bud­dhist Cen­tre Ven. Udu­mal­gala Piyananda Thera anointed the she ele­phant “Indi.”

The cer­e­mony was or­gan­ised by the Deputy Di­rec­tor Anoma Priyadar­shani, As­sis­tant Di­rec­tor Di­neshka Manawadu, Chief Vet­eri­nary Sur­geon Mad­husha Per­era, Se­nior Con­trollers K.C. Kith­siri and Amitha Per­era and the care­taker of the “Ali Eth Se­vana” Upul Ja­yaratne.

The staff of the zoo and a large num­ber of vis­i­tors were present on the oc­ca­sion.
