FOOD RAIDS WITHIN COLOMBO MU­NIC­I­PAL AREA DUR­ING FES­TIVE SEA­SON

Spe­cial food raids were con­ducted within the Colombo mu­nic­i­pal­ity area dur­ing the fes­ti­val sea­son, Colombo Chief Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer (CMO) Dr. Ruwan Wi­jey­muni said.

The CMO went on to say that health of­fi­cials would con­tinue with raids un­til the end of the fes­tive sea­son.

Raids were con­ducted mainly in the Borella and Wellawatta ar­eas where mainly, ex­pired fruits and canned food were taken into cus­tody and de­stroyed by

the au­thor­i­ties.

Dr. Wi­jey­muni re­quested the pub­lic to be cau­tious when pur­chas­ing cooked meals and fruits sold by road side ven­dors.

The CMO con­cluded that the num­ber of er­rant traders within the city lim­its had seen a con­sid­er­able de­crease this year.

“Suc­ces­sive raids and strict le­gal ac­tion by the health of­fi­cials have en­sured that the num­ber of ven­dors sell­ing un­hy­gienic and ex­pired food has de­creased over the years,” he said.

Ac­cord­ing to the Pub­lic Health In­spec­tor’s Union of Sri Lanka, close to 1,800 PHI’S had been de­ployed to con­duct raids and for in­spec­tion across the is­land.
