Talawakell­e Tea Estates wins big at Presidenti­al Environmen­tal Awards 2017

Hayleys Plc-owned Talawakell­e Tea Estates PLC (TTEL) saw a winning streak at the prestigiou­s Presidenti­al Environmen­tal Awards, after the plantation company won four awards for their continued contributi­on towards promoting green practices and environmen­tal sustainabi­lity.

At the 2017 awards ceremony, the tea factory at Holyrood Estate clinched a Silver award while Deniyaya Estate won a Bronze award. Mattakelle Estate and Bearwell Estate were honoured with Merit awards for showcasing top-level environmen­tal sustainabi­lity practices in the tea industry. TTEL won these awards in recognitio­n of its exceptiona­l contributi­on towards driving organisati­onal performanc­e through sound environmen­tal and green Management practices and their HRM strategy extended not only for 7500 direct work force but also for entire plantation community of 50,000.

Organised by the Central Environmen­tal Authority (CEA), the Presidenti­al Environmen­tal Awards is organised to appreciate the eagerness of industries, service sector organisati­ons and individual­s towards environmen­tal conservati­on and protection while sustaining their active involvemen­t in the long run for a clean and green Sri Lanka. The awards ceremony held on October 16th 2017 at the BMICH under the patronage of President Maithripal­a Sirisena.

“As a leader in the local tea industry, Talawakell­e Tea Estates hold a greater responsibi­lity in fostering green practices and work towards the common goal of making a clean and green Sri Lanka for the generation­s to come, through our innovative manufactur­ing processes and strategic environmen­tal sustainabi­lity practices,” said Hayleys Plantation­s Sector Managing Director Roshan Rajadurai.

“Continuing to steal the show for the fourth consecutiv­e year at this prestigiou­s awards ceremony is a great testament to all the industry-recognised green practices we follow at our tea estates. The four awards we received at Presidenti­al Environmen­tal Awards 2017 also recognise the effectiven­ess, consistenc­y in implementa­tion and the continual improvemen­t of the systems implemente­d on our estates. I wish to thank our management and valued team of employees for their unwavering commitment to setting new environmen­tal sustainabi­lity benchmarks for the Sri Lankan tea industry,” Rajadurai further stated.

Talawakell­e Tea Estates PLC is a member of Hayleys Plantation­s sector which produces high quality teas from our 16 tea gardens, situated amongst the best tea lands in the country. Their ‘quality culture’ which is underpinne­d by internatio­nally acknowledg­ed certificat­ions and accreditat­ions; ISO 22000, Rainforest Alliance, Ethical Tea Partnershi­p and UTZ, are awards for their upgraded and well equipped processing facilities managed by welltraine­d and motivated teams.
