PRESIDENT REVISES DEPUTY MINISTER’S PORTFOLIO

Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka) - - BUSINESS NEWS - BY YOHAN PERERA

President Maithripala Sirisena has revised the Portfolio of Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Kadar Mastan following representations made by the subject Cabinet Minister D. M. Swaminathan and several others.

Mr. Mastan therefore would be the Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement while he will not hold the Hindu Affairs Portfolio any longer.

Ministry sources said an appointment of a Deputy Minister in charge of Hindu Affairs is not likely to be made.“when a State minister was appointed in addition to the Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs in 2015, he was not given the portfolio of Hindu Affairs. M. L. A. M. Hisbullah, who was the State Minister in 2015, did not hold the Portfolio of Hindu Affairs. Therefore, it is likely that a separate Deputy Minister in charge of Hindu Affairs will not be appointed,” sources said.

Many including Cabinet Minister Mano Ganesan were critical of the decision by President Sirisena to appoint Mr. Mastan. Tamil Ministers and MPS including Mr. Ganesan questioned as to how a Muslim who believes in the Islamic religion coulssd be a Deputy Minister in charge of Hindu Affairs.“i would have protested if a Hindu was appointed as a Minister in charge of Islamic affairs,” Mr. Ganesan said.
