EV­ERY CITIZEN HAS DEBT BUR­DEN OF 4 LAKHS: AMARAWEERA

Min­is­ter of Agri­cul­ture Mahinda Amaraweera said ev­ery citizen in the coun­try was bur­dened with debt amount­ing to more than Rs.400,000 and that he was not pleased with the on-gong de­vel­op­ment process.

Ad­dress­ing the in­au­gu­ral cer­e­mony of the na­tional pro­gramme to plant 1 mil­lion jak seedlings and to dis­trib­ute 100,000 fruit plants at the Panadurwa Jeramius Dias Ju­nior School, he said that Arthur V. Dias, a na­tional hero pop­u­larly known as “Kos Mama launched a mas­sive food pro­duc­tion cam­paign.

He said the coun­try still im­ported a large quan­tity of food that could be pro­duced here and de­pended on for­eign loans that swal­lowed a big slice of the coun­try’s in­come as debt ser­vic­ing.

“My plan is to boost agri­cul­ture in or­der to re­duce food im­ports to the bare min­i­mum.

The min­is­ter gar­landed a por­trait of Arthur V.dias (Kos Mama) dur­ing his visit.
