Mother complains to HRC: Daughter expelled from school unfairly
A resident of Moragolla in Gampola, Damayanthi Wijeratne, has filed a petition with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission against the Gampola Zonal Director of Education and the Principal of the Gangasiripura Vidyalaya for refusing to admit her daughter to school and depriving her of the right to education for seven months.
The petitioner said that when the zonal director failed to admit her daughter to a school she had taken her case to the Chief Minister and Central Province Education Minister Sarath Ekanayake who then instructed the zonal director to admit the child to the school. However on November 2017 the child was expelled from school on the instructions of the zonal director. She said her daughter, who should be in grade two this year, is now without a school and as a last resort she had lodged a complaint with the human rights commission.
Coordinating Officer of the Human Rights Commission in Kandy Kumudini Vitarana said it was illegal to deprive a child of his or her right to education. The petition was to be taken up for hearing yesterday (14).
