2,768 raids on illegal polythene since January; legal action against 181: CEA
The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has conducted 2,768 raids on illegal polythene production during which 181 individuals have been brought to book from January, 2018 to May 31.
The CEA banned the use of polythene lunch sheets, Styrofoam boxes and shopping bags with effect from September 1, 2017.
The raids were conducted on the basis of production, sales, storing of illegal polythene items.
According to the CEA Investigation Unit data, the raids have been conducted in areas such as Colombo, Gampaha, Boralesgamuwa, Attanagalla, Ragama, Bambalapitiya, Pettah, Pepiliyana, Kotahena, Kelaniya, Thotalanga, Katunayake, Seeduwa and Naiwala.
The CEA will continue to conduct raids in future too with the support of the police.
