At least three youths died of suspected drug overdose with over 30 others were hospitalized, when an ‘open wild party’ organised through a Facebook Entertainment Page at a leading beach resort in Wadduwa on Saturday night, which, about 2, 000 young partygoers had attended.
Three young men, who were undergoing treatment for a sickness after a party, had died in Panadura Hospital yesterday, hospital sources said.
According to the Police at least thirty partygoers had been admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital on Saturday night due to sudden illness following a party at a hotel in Wadduwa.
According to the Police, another individual was critical and at the ICU.
The deceased were identified as Eranda Perera (36) of Hena Road, Nilan Shamika (20) of Divulapitiya and Viduranga Desha (31) of Morntuduwa.
The Police said the cause of the death had not been ascertained yet and that the post-mortem examination would be held.
They said that they believed it could have been caused by an overdose of a drug.
It was also reported that about Rs. 3,000 has been charged for the party and a large number of youths have participated in the party.
The function was organized by an advertisement on social media.
The Wadduwa Police who are investigating the incident had recorded statements from the organizer and from other participants.
Meanwhile, MP Nala Rajapaksa tweeted that the two died after complications during the party, organized by social media entities down south.
“If this is yet another drug-related incident it’s completely unacceptable. Why is nothing done to prevent the illegal trading of drugs into and within Sri Lankan borders?” he tweeted.
