Port City will be­come a World Class city in South Asia: SL Am­bas­sador in China

Sri Lankan Am­bas­sador to China Dr. Karunasena Kodi­tuwakku said the Colombo Port City would gen­er­ate im­mense ben­e­fits to the na­tional econ­omy.

He was ad­dress­ing a func­tion Chengdu, China to mark the Sec­ond High-level In­ter­na­tional Fo­rum on Sus­tain­able Ur­ban Devel­op­ment and par­tic­i­pate in the Panel Di­a­logue on Im­prov­ing Ur­ban Qual­ity by Cre­at­ing Gar­den Cities. A copy of his speech was made avail­able by the Sri Lankan em­bassy in Bei­jing. He said as an­nounced by the in­vestor CHEC Port City Colombo owned by China Har­bour En­gi­neer­ing Com­pany, the com­pleted Port City will have 5.6 mil­lion square me­ters of build-up space, some of the best in de­sign in terms of Grade A of­fices, med­i­cal and ed­u­ca­tional fa­cil­i­ties, in­te­grated re­sorts, a ma­rina, re­tail des­ti­na­tions, ho­tels, and var­i­ous other life­style de­vel­op­ments.

“The in­vestor is us­ing the lat­est sus­tain­able city de­sign and smart city con­cepts. The to­tal ex­pected in­vest­ment is US$ 15 bil­lion. The de­clared vi­sion of the project is “Build­ing a World Class City for South Asia”. This kind of well-planned peo­ple-friendly cities are ideal for in­hab­i­tants who live and work there. This kind of flag­ship pro­jects can gen­er­ate im­mense ben­e­fits to na­tional economies. How­ever, due to the huge fi­nan­cial in­vest­ment in­volved, only very rich clients can ben­e­fit from them,” he said.

He said, “The flag­ship mega ur­ban devel­op­ment project now un­der con­struc­tion in Sri Lanka is the Colombo In­ter­na­tional Fi­nan­cial Cen­tre, pop­u­larly known as the Port City of Colombo. This is a brand-new city span­ning 269 hectares, nearly 3 square kilo­me­tres, is a one of the big­gest in­vest­ment un­der the Belt and Road Ini­tia­tives. It is a sea-recla­ma­tion project ad­join­ing the main Colombo fi­nan­cial cen­tre. This new Port City will com­prise of five dif­fer­ent zones; (i) Fi­nan­cial District; (ii) Cen­tral Park Liv­ing; (iii) In­ter­na­tional Is­land; (iv) The Ma­rina; and (v) Is­land Liv­ing.
