Nisal Walpola of Royal College stole the limelight at the Annual Royal-thomian Sailing Regatta worked off at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club in the Bolgoda Lake on Saturday.

Walpola put up a pleasing performance to snatch the individual honours in this prestigious event while winning the coveted award for the Best Sailor in the meet.

His outstanding performance also helped Royal regain the overall championship title as well as the Ranil Dias Trophy after a lapse of four years.

S. Thomas’ College, of course, had dominated this event having won the overall championship for three successive years.

However, this time Royal came out with their best effort as they went on to win the overall championship for the first time. Royal managed to collect a total of six points from their events and edged-out S. Thomas’ who were able to collect only four points from their events.

Royal also had the satisfaction of winning the Ray Wijewardene Challenge trophy as they emerged overall champions in the Laser Class ‘A’ event.

The winning Royal team was coached by Devin Gunawardene while Nadine De Rosairo was in charge of the S. Thomas’ team.

The meet was jointly organised by Royal College and S. Thomas’ College. Asian Games Silver Medalist Ekandra Edirisinghe was the Chief Guest.
