Petition handed over to UN over violation of consumer rights
A group of Sri Lankan activists handed over a petition to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in Geneva on Monday against the alleged violation of human rights under the current Government’s tenure.
Rights Activists Dr Prathiba Mahanamahewa, Dr Nalaka Godahewa, Madushan Harindra, Aruna Warusahennadige, Nimala Liyanapatabendige and Roshan Weerapura handed over the petition representing the World Sri Lankan Association (WSLA) and the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP).
Speaking to the media after handing over the petition, Dr Mahanamahewa said it took months to get a reply from authorities in Sri Lanka to a complaint lodged by a consumer.
