Petition handed over to UN over violation of consumer rights

A group of Sri Lankan activists handed over a petition to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in Geneva on Monday against the alleged violation of human rights under the current Government’s tenure.

Rights Activists Dr Prathiba Mahanamahe­wa, Dr Nalaka Godahewa, Madushan Harindra, Aruna Warusahenn­adige, Nimala Liyanapata­bendige and Roshan Weerapura handed over the petition representi­ng the World Sri Lankan Associatio­n (WSLA) and the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP).

Speaking to the media after handing over the petition, Dr Mahanamahe­wa said it took months to get a reply from authoritie­s in Sri Lanka to a complaint lodged by a consumer.
