An Ad­vanced Level stu­dent of Gam­paha Ban­daranaike Vidyalaya has made his­tory by build­ing a rocket that can travel upto 20 kilo­me­tres.

The rocket made by the stu­dent, L.H. Gi­han Het­tiarachchi, was dis­played at the ed­u­ca­tion ex­hi­bi­tion con­ducted in re­spect of the school’s cen­te­nary cel­e­bra­tion re­cently.

Pres­i­dent Maithri­pala Sirisena, who in­au­gu­rated the ex­hi­bi­tion, had com­mended the stu­dent on his drive and ded­i­ca­tion to come up with such a clever cre­ation. Gi­han said that he had got the tech­no­log­i­cal knowl­edge for his cre­ation by brows­ing the in­ter­net for two months be­fore com­ing up with it. He said that this rocket can travel at a speed of 750 km per hour. It stands 20 feet tall and weighs 25 kilo­grammes. He also said that the Pres­i­dent had promised to give him the nec­es­sary fi­nan­cial as­sis­tance in or­der to de­velop this rocket even fur­ther.

Ac­cord­ing to him, Rs. 50,000 has been spent by him for this cre­ation and a fur­ther

Rs.900, 000 was needed in or­der to be able to launch the rocket. He stated that upon re­ceiv­ing ap­proval from the Sri Lanka Air­force, it will be launched into or­bit at a func­tion to be con­ducted within the air­base at Kal­pi­tiya, Put­ta­lam. He said he would in­vite the Pres­i­dent to wit­ness the launch.
