ROCKET BUILT BY A/L STUDENT COMES IN FOR PRAISE FROM PRESIDENT

An Advanced Level student of Gampaha Bandaranai­ke Vidyalaya has made history by building a rocket that can travel upto 20 kilometres.

The rocket made by the student, L.H. Gihan Hettiarach­chi, was displayed at the education exhibition conducted in respect of the school’s centenary celebratio­n recently.

President Maithripal­a Sirisena, who inaugurate­d the exhibition, had commended the student on his drive and dedication to come up with such a clever creation. Gihan said that he had got the technologi­cal knowledge for his creation by browsing the internet for two months before coming up with it. He said that this rocket can travel at a speed of 750 km per hour. It stands 20 feet tall and weighs 25 kilogramme­s. He also said that the President had promised to give him the necessary financial assistance in order to develop this rocket even further.

According to him, Rs. 50,000 has been spent by him for this creation and a further

Rs.900, 000 was needed in order to be able to launch the rocket. He stated that upon receiving approval from the Sri Lanka Airforce, it will be launched into orbit at a function to be conducted within the airbase at Kalpitiya, Puttalam. He said he would invite the President to witness the launch.
