-

Veteran dance guru Preethi Ganegoda who imparts her knowledge and skills to hundreds of students, has also excelled in psychology and dance therapy. She recently held a special dance programme titled ‘Vijayadhashani’ at her dance academy at Ananda Mawatha, Colombo 10, to coincide with the Navarathri Festival.

WHAT’S YOUR VIEW ABOUT THE STATUS OF DANCE IN TODAY’S CONTEXT?

Dance has earned a special place in society today and is one of the most popular forms of performing arts. Be it reality programmes, weddings, sports events or other functions, priority is given to dance segments. Our dance forms have reached international standards, but we will have to think twice about the quality and costumes of such dances. When it comes to events of children, things appear to be somewhat heartening.

YOU ARE KNOWN FOR YOUR EXTRA ORDINARY SKILLS AS A BHARATHA NATYAM DANCER AND TEACHER. YOU HAVE EVEN WRITTEN A |BOOK ON THE SUBJECT. HOW HAS IT PROGRESSED IN OUR COUNTRY TODAY?

Bharatha Natyam is a form of dance that comprises many classical fundamental aspects. Many young girls and women take up Bharatha Natyam but the majority of them call it a day after their Arangetram. Discipline, determination and intelligence are common features that we see in Bharatha Natyam students.in our academy we go one step ahead by refining these qualities in children and grooming them into good citizens. This dance form is not only a medium of entertainment. It has a lot of depth spiritually too. We try to expose children to this reality as well. We also engage in dance therapy which is common in many countries. I blend dance therapy with psychology as well. 0773435400 could be contacted for more details
