The UNP is planning a mass rally in Colombo on November 12 against the prorogation of Parliament and urging the upholding of democracy in the country, party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.

Mr. Kariyawasam who was speaking to the media amidst the vehicle parade to Parliament organized by his party last evening said this would be a part of his party’s continuous struggle against the sacking of the Prime Minister and forming a new cabinet.

“The country has come to a standstill. No investor makes any decision. We will fight continuously.we will hold street protests.we will have a rally in Colombo on November 12,” Mr. Kariyawasam said.

“No head of state has violated the Constitution in the past.there is nothing to talk about when the Constitution is violated.the new government does not have a majority and we will show it when the House is reconvened,” he added.

MP Ranjith Madudduma Bandara urged the president to take effective steps to end the present crisis.“this madness should be stopped forthwith,” he said.

UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim said more and more are joining this struggle to preserve democracy and the constitution of this country. “The appointment of a new PM and cabinet is illegal.the economy is hit badly, the rupee is continuously devaluing. One would be able to give goodies to the people only for a few days. People will have to suffer in the long run because of this crisis.the House should be convened immediately so that the present crisis could be resolved,” he said.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was seen standing at the front gate accompanied by several senior UNP members including Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake,

Palitha Range Bandara , Ranjith Maduma Bandara and Ranjith Aluvihare.

Hundreds of vehicles were seen moving along Galle Road tooting horns and shouting slogans.
