Alleged assassination attempt on President

- BY WASANTHA CHANDRAPALA AND SANDARU BANDARA

It is very pertinent to note Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka’s statement, in it he alleges that his people are everywhere. From this revelation, it is clear that there is an accomplice of his is with underworld kingpin Makandure Madush

Anti-vice Movement Director Namal Kumara speaking at a press briefing held at his residence in Maha Oya called upon the CID to conduct a comprehensive investigation on matters raised by Former Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

He said Mr. Fonseka had alleged during a press conference held at the Temple Trees that the President was attempting to obtain an audio recording from ‘Makandure Madush’ to the effect that he was to be assassinated, after making a payment of Rs.3,500 million. He said further that he has the right to speak on this matter as he was the complainant against this incident. Therefore, I invited the media to make this statement and create awareness among the people.

“It is very pertinent to note Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka’s statement, in it he alleges that his people are everywhere. From this revelation, it is clear that there is an accomplice of his is with underworld kingpin Makandure Madush. If it is so, it is his duty to disclose this to the media, but doubts arise as to whether he has that done so up to now.”

“Therefore, I am willing to state that here what had been revealed was a plot to assassinate the President, and therefore, the comments made by Mr. Fonseka was having a direct impact. I am not certain whether these are true or not. But as the matter is serious, I call upon the CID to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Considering the statement made by a former Minister about a plot to assassinate the President, we cannot ignore it as a minor incident. The entire nation is watching this situation and at this juncture, we cannot maintain silent. It is your duty as responsible Media representatives to investigate that why no follow up action did not take place over this statement, nor a complaint was lodged.

During the recent past, former minister Sarath Fonseka said that nothing was mentioned about the plot to assassinate the President in the audio recording. He had no need to talk about it because I had already told what was necessary (showing a Newspaper). He said he could not disclose everything as the matter is being referred to courts.

“Mr. Fonseka says further that Makandure Madush is an innocent person, and he uses an improvised weapon - a locally made firearm to avenge an injustice caused to him, and through this revelation, I am scared that my life is now in danger.”

I am ashamed to note that a former Army Commander was making such declarations, and I doubt whether he is fit to hold the post of a Field Marshal, Namal Kumara said further.
