PRES­I­DENT HAS THE SOLE DIS­CRE­TION TO AS­SIGN SUB­JECTS

The Sri Lanka Po­lice Depart­ment was brought un­der the purview of the De­fence Min­istry by Pres­i­dent Maithri­pala Sirisena un­der the con­sti­tu­tional pow­ers vested in him.

Cur­rently, the Pres­i­dent is the De­fence Min­is­ter. The gazette no­tice was is­sued by Pres­i­dent Maithri­pala Sirisena re-as­sign­ing the var­i­ous de­part­ments, cor­po­ra­tions and other stat­u­ary bod­ies un­der the re­cently cre­ated min­istries.

Srilankan Air­lines and Mi­hin Lanka have been brought un­der the Min­istry of Trans­port and Civil Avi­a­tion.

The Pres­i­dent has the sole dis­cre­tion in terms of the Constitution to as­sign sub­jects to min­istries. The Po­lice re­mained un­der the purview of the Law and Or­der Min­istry dur­ing the pre­vi­ous Unp-led rule. Banks were brought un­der Prime Min­is­ter Mahinda Ra­japaksa who is also the Fi­nance Min­is­ter.
