We’re opposed to elections under this illegal Govt: JVP
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said yesterday it was dangerous to go for an election under a government which obtained power through unconstitutional means and stressed the need to rectify the present political crisis before going for a national election.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference that the approval of a two-thirds majority in parliament should be obtained after rectifying this unconstitutional political coup before announcing an election.
“It is dangerous if someone goes for an election after obtaining power by unconstitutional means. If an election was announced under this illegal government, it will be clearly construed as a part of this political coup,” he said. Mr. Silva said the political crisis had plunged the country into instability and anarchy and warned that if this crisis dragged on the damage caused to the country would be enormous. “Most of the State institutions are stalled and the country’s image tarnished internationally,” he said adding that the JVP would oppose this constitutional coup. He said some government members and intellectuals opposed to Ranil Wickremesinghe have voiced their concerns about this crisis.
