Estate worker walks to Colombo demanding Rs 1,000 daily wage
A protestor demanding Rs. 1,000 per day wage for plantation sector workers had walked 180 kilometres all the way from the Glassaugh Estate in Agarapatana and reached Colombo on Saturday, November 10.
The protestor, Suppaiyah Sathyendra, a worker at the Glassaugh Estate began his walk after performing Hindu religious rituals on Friday, October 9 from the Diagama Town. He also had vel piercings all over his body and he also carried a national flag.
Sathyendra said that he walked to Colombo without meals and water to draw the attention of Government and plantation companies.
The workers of the plantation sector are demanding a raise in their wages, demanding that their daily wage is increased to Rs. 1,000 a day.
