Inclement weather hinders police team
Death of tourist at World’s End
Police said they were facing obstructions caused by inclement weather and the thick mist, in their attempt to bring down through Nonferriel estate the body of the German young woman who had fallen down the World’s End. A senior official of Samanalawewa police said police teams from Samanalawewa and Balangoda police, the army and the wildlife conservation officers who made a long trek to the scene on Sunday afternoon spent the night in a slope between the World’s End and the Nonferriel estate. He said the body of the woman was weighing 110 kilos . Police teams under OIC Samanalawewa Police IP Lawrence Fernando and OIC Balangoda Police IP Udayana Bandara Thennakoon had reached the upper section of the Nonferrial estate which was about 4,000 ft below the summit of the World’s End. Officials said the distance from the upper section of the estate was about 20 kms away from Pambahinna on the Badulla-colombo road.
The German tourist Juria Elga (35) had fallen down the deep precipice during her visit to the World’s End in her attempt to take a photo. Her body had been recovered by a group of army officials under Mjr. Asitha Ranaweera and the employees of the Wildlife Conservation Department who rushed to the scene.
IP Udayana Bandara said a group of military personnel and a team of police officials were deployed in the early hours of last morning to carry a stock of food for the officials who were at the foot of the lower slope of the World’s End. He said the body would be handed over to the Balangoda Base hospital for a postmortem examination.
