Let us dedicate ourselves to safeguard the Constitution

- BY YOHAN PERERA

In a Facebook post yesterday, ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday stressed the need to strengthen the systems available to safeguard the people’s freedom.

“The citizens of Sri Lanka have come forward in large numbers to defend our freedoms. Let us all dedicate ourselves to safeguarding the Constitution and defeating this threat to our freedoms and our future. We can then focus on completing the task of ensuring a stronger system of democratic governance for our country,” he said.

“Thirty eight months ago, we established a new system of democratic governance by strengthening Parliament, establishing supplementary independent commissions, and protecting fundamental rights. Today, we are facing a crisis that is testing us in Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Election Commission and will determine whether parliamentary democracy triumphs or whether the executive presidency is permitted to override the sovereignty of the people.”
