Filling water into the Kaluganga Reservoir on target: President told
Officials of the Mahaweli Authority told President Maithripala Sirisena that the process of filling water into the Kaluganga Reservoir as part of the Moragahakanda - Kaluganga project, which is the final Mahaweli project to be undertaken in the country, was on target and progress was highly satisfactory.
The process was initiated under the patronage of President Sirisena in late July. It is expected that the filling of the reservoir will be completed at the start of 2019 in time for the rains and after the completion of the project the, farmer community of the Rajarata region will be able to cultivate the Yala and Maha seasons without any difficulty even during a drought when rainfall is at a minimum.
The President, who went on an observation visit to the Mahaweli Authority last Monday (12), engaged in discussions with the officers at the auditorium.
The fisheries industry, electricity, tourism and other industries have been initiated under the Moragahakanda-kaluganga water projects. The President inquired into the latest activities including the new city of Laggala, the first environment industry of Sri Lanka, the special environment regions project, and the progress of cultivation projects.
The President also asked officials to release Mahaweli lands to their owners as quickly as possible.
Secretary of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anura Dissanayake, the new Secretary General of the Mahaweli Authority Dr. D.M.S. Dissanayake and several senior officials were present.
Thereafter, the President visited the National Gem and Jewellery Authority in Colombo and observed its functioning and engaged in friendly chatter with the staff.
The President emphasized the importance of providing a good service to customers who arrive there for business.
President Sirisena then made his way over to the counter of the Presidential Secretariat and observed proceedings. He observed the facilities given to visitors to the Presidential Secretariat while he was there.
