EMBILIPITIYA ROYAL, MEDAGAMA PRIMARY DOMINATE AT SABARAGAMUWA
The Sabaragamuwa Zonal programme of the Kids’athletics Championship conducted by the Primary Section of the Zonal Education Office of Sabaragamuwa which is one of the qualifying events for the All Island Championship scheduled to be held in early December saw Royal College, Embilipitiya and Elagama Medagama Primary School, Kegalle dominating the proceedings which were held at the Seevali Central Ground in Ratnapura recently.
Royal College, Embilipitiya bagged three titles winning the Grade 3 and 4 (boys) category and the Grade 5 (girls) category while Elagama Medagama Primary School won the Grade 4 and 5 (boys) category.
The Kids’ Athletics Championship conducted by the Minister of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd was held for school children in Grade 3, 4 and 5 and saw the participation of 191 schools from the Sabaragamuwa Province comprising of 3,200 kids in the boys, girls and mixed schools categories.
The qualifying championships are held in all the provinces with the top three schools in the boys, girls and mixed categories being eligible to compete in the All Island Kids’ Athletics Championship.
The programme comprising of five events namely, hurdles, rope skipping, forward squatting, cross hopping and knee throw is conducted with the aim of encouraging school children to get involved in sports activities.
The other winners in the respective grades were Galigamuwa Primary School Kegalle (Grade 3 – Girls), Vijayariya Primary School Embilipitiya (Grade 3 – Mixed), Pahala Maniyangama Primary School Dehiowita (Grade 4 – Mixed) and Thanadela Mahawelahena Vidyalaya Nivithigala (Grade 5 – Mixed).
