KARAMBA VILLAGE INUNDATED FOR MORE THAN A MONTH
Karamba village in Kalpitiya has been under water for more than a month after the heavy rains experienced in the area recently, much to the anxiety of a large population. Residents of the area said that the heavy influx of storm water from surrounding areas had submerged the Karamba village leaving them in a predicament.
The residents out that their houses had gone underwater but not a single official had visit the village to look into the hardship facing by the people. They accused the authorities of neglecting to maintain storm water canals and had resulted in this perilous state of affairs.
“Roads have been under two feet of water disrupting civilian life and transport. The supply of food to the village has been affected for want of transport. Meanwhile the stagnant water has created several mosquito breeding sites and we are exposed to the danger of a dengue epidemic. The overflowing toilet pits has created another health hazard. The divisional secretariat and the local authorities have ignored the unauthorised constructions which obstruct the canals. They have been put up by those receiving political patronage,” a resident said.
However, Puttalam district Additional Government Agent H.M.S.P. Herath said he had not received any report in this regard and would look into it immediately.
