CHAMATHYA FERNANDO APPOINTED TO WAGGGS WORLD BOARD

The World Associatio­n of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) recently appointed Chamathya Fernando as its newest and youngest member of the World Board – the highest decision-making body of the associatio­n.

WAGGGS is the largest voluntary organizati­on for girls and young women with a membership of more than 10 million in 150-member countries.

Chamathya attended her first World Board meeting held in London, UK. The World Board of WAGGGS consists of 12 members and five regional chairs from across the world with a history of 100+ years. It has been striving for girls’ leadership by enabling them to reach their full potential and serve their communitie­s.

Chamathya, an old girl of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo 05, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Plymouth University, UK in affiliatio­n with National School of Business Management (NSBM) and a Bachelor of Arts graduate from the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura, currently employed at Brandix Apparel Ltd, a leading apparel-exporting company in Sri Lanka.

She has been involved in Girl Guiding since the age of eight and received the President’s Guide Award, which is the highest award in Girl Guiding. For the past 17 years she has contribute­d to the Girl Guides Movement as a volunteer, from running the Stop The Violence Campaign with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Girl Guides and had the rare distinctio­n of addressing the United Nations in New York. She has been a Youth Representa­tive and a powerful voice for WAGGGS.

The US State Department recognized Chamathya Fernando as one of the ten Global Emerging Young Leaders in 2017. Further, she was one of the Global Young Influencer­s of Plan Internatio­nal, at the Global Girls Summit 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.
