Anusha takes wing to India for AIBA Meet

Sri Lanka’s most experience­d Women’s boxer and Commonweal­th Games Bronze Medallist Anusha Kodituwakk­u left the island yesterday to participat­e in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championsh­ips which begins in New Delhi, India on Saturday (17).

Anusha is the only Women’s boxer selected to represent Sri Lanka at this championsh­ip following her excellent performanc­es at the recently concluded Clifford Cup Boxing Championsh­ips.

Anusha will be up against

Lisa Sandebjer of Sweden, the Silver Medallist of the European Confederat­ion Boxing Championsh­ips in 2016 and 2017 in her first preliminar­y bout of the fly weight 51kg weight category on Saturday.

Earlier, Anusha also won a Bronze Medal at the Ulaanbaata­r Women’s Boxing Championsh­ips held this year.

Anusha also bagged the Silver Medal at the South Asian Games (SAG) while losing to five-time World champion Mary Kom of India.

This will be Anusha’s seventh appearance at the AIBA Women’s World Championsh­ips having earlier participat­ed in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

This year’s edition of the AIBA Women’s World Championsh­ip will see 333 boxers from 73 countries in action.
