- BY NADEEKA DAYA BANDARA AND J.A.L. JAYASINGHE

The Malwathu Chapter Mahanayake, the Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera yesterday urged President Maithripala Sirisena to convene Parliament and find a solution to the current political crisis and instability in the country.

In a letter, he said he hoped the President and the Parliament would be able to come up with solutions which were constitutional and ethical.

“Immediate measures need to be taken to prevent further collapse of the country,” the prelate said and added that the good name of the country had been tarnished following the deterioration of the political, economic and social status of the country resulting in the country being on the verge of plunging into anarchy.

“As the first citizen of the country you can see the damage being caused to the country and it is your foremost duty to give serious thought to this issue and come up with proper solutions,” he said in his letter.“at a time when the country is embroiled in a crisis situation, you are bound give priority to the parliamentary customs and traditions and the Constitution of the country.”
