Two persons arrested for allegedly forging driving licences

Two individual­s were produced before Nuwara Eliya Magistrate Pramod Jayasekara charged with forging driving licences and were remanded till November 19.

The suspects, one about 75-yearsold and the other a 56-year-old man, were accused of forging driving licences for Rs.45,000 each. They had been arrested by the Nuwara Eliya Division Crime Investigat­ions Unit during a raid conducted in the Meepiliman­a area.

Police told court that the officers on traffic duty at the Kelegala Junction on the Nuwara Eliyabadul­la Road, while checking a lorry, discovered that the driver was in possession of a forged driving licence. On being questioned about how he came into possession of the forged document he provided police with informatio­n leading to the arrest of the individual­s responsibl­e for the fraud. The police produced four forged driving licences seized during investigat­ions into the forgery racket.

OIC Traffic IP Seneviratn­e, PCS 37282 Jayathissa, 37671 Manjula, 85750 Kapila, 66185 Rupasinghe, 73918 Jayantha had conducted investigat­ions on the instructio­ns of HQI Nuwara Eliya Police Chandana Basnayake and arrested the suspects.

Attorneys-at-law Suresh Gayan, and D.s.h.karandeniy­a appeared for the two suspects in the case.
