Prisoner on death row allegedly killed by fellow prisoners

A prisoner of the Angunukola­pelessa Prison had been hit with a stone and killed last afternoon by two fellow prisoners. The deceased, Menaka Sanjeewa (39) had been jailed for the murder of six members of a single family in Hokandara in 1999 and sentenced to death.

Prisons Superinten­dent W.P. Dhammika said the two prisoners suspected of the killing had been convicted of two other murders and were on death row.

OIC Angunukola­pelessa IP Kithari Gunawarden­e was conducting investigat­ions with the assistance of Prisons Superinten­dent B.m.m.dasanayake coming under SPS Abeyraj Gamlath and Laksiri Geethal under the command of DIG Vijitha Gunaratne.
