Price we pay for democracy is exorbitant

-

Whoever comes to power, the UNP block vote needs to be a factor for good governance. ‘Yahapalanaya’ was a mechanism to create stability for governance in the interest of foreign investment and to arrest the spinning of the power pendulum as intended by framers of the Constitution.

Jayawardena Constitution, as it was baptized by the masses, has been tested by history and a clever political analyst will be able to identify the loopholes. The Constitution has created minority governments. However, stable governments to give the voter the assurance of political stability to do his business like in the French Constitution has assured the French people. Also, there is frequent change in the Cabinet in place of elections and the assets belonging to the government are secured. The only loophole is the ability for the business tycoon to buy the legislature which is the supreme institution created by the people.

Let sense prevail in our leaders as they have some knowledge on provincial and central politics to be mindful of what their roles are in lawmaking. Address needs to be made to liquidation of huge legislature and to go for a 101 Parliamentarian Chamber at the Centre and abolition of provincial legislature on top of the local government. Legislature because they make no sense.
