Fertilizer from urban garbage not injurious-research reveals

- BY DAYASEELI LIYANAGE

A research carried out by the Agriculture Ministry has disproved the belief that the fertilizer produced after processing the garbage collected in urban areas contained cadmium. Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said there was a belief among the people that fertilizer made from the urban garbage collected contained cadmium that was harmful to the kidneys. As a result, the Agriculture Ministry instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a research and submit a report to ascertain the truth in that regard.

However, the research report had revealed that there was no presence of noxious cadmium contents that was harmful to human body in the fertilizer produced out of the urban garbage.
