CYCLONE “GAJA” DISPLACES 3,937 IN JAFFNA DISTRICT

The Disaster Management Centre said some 3,937 people from 1,064 families in the Jaffna District had been affected by cyclone ‘GAJA’ and the rainy weather.

It said several houses were destroyed and the residents of Marudanken­i, Point Pedro, Karaweddi, Chavakachc­heri, Thellippal­ai, Uduwil, Sandilipai, Kopay, Nallur, Jaffna, Karainagar, Kayts, Velanai and Delft islands were displaced.

The DMC said 45 people from 14 families were provided temporary shelter while 59 small scale business places have been damaged and 597 houses were partially damaged and 77 houses destroyed in various places in the Jaffna District.

Steps have been taken by the District Secretaria­t of Jaffna and the Office of the Disaster Management Centre in Jaffna to provide them with relief.

Meanwhile the Northern Province Governor has decided to close all schools in the Northern Province due to the prevailing situation.
